Quick but interesting

Here's a photo essay that Fox (gasp!) News did on the volcanic eruption in Chaiten. I was doing research on how to get from Prague to Dresden, from Dresden to Berlin, from Buenos Aires to Esquel, and from Esquel to FutaleufĂș, when a Google search turned up this: http://www.foxnews.com/photoessay/0,4644,3905,00.html.

It is fascinating to see so much of this itty-bitty town and the people I live with and teach revealed through such a major media source. It's like finding your fifth-grade science report published 15 years later in Scientific American, or a photo of your first cat in National Geographic.* The strange thing is, I wouldn't experience this odd reaction to pictures of Des Moines. I suppose that Futa is so very isolated in my mind from the rest of the world, and the people and things within it are connected with memories, inside jokes, my feelings of frustration and humor, that it is rather jolting to see the town made public to so wide an audience.** There is also the fact that my friends and family don't know it. They know Des Moines, the lucky devils! But not Futa. That's mine.

Photo #15: the little girl on the right is one of my third-grade students, Gabriela.
Photo #21: there are two vans here. The red one is Adelio's sad, broken-down vehicle. :)

* Many people would be appalled at my comparing Fox News with Scientific American or National Geographic. I understand their shock and confusion, and apologize, but the comparison suits my purposes.
** That audience now consists of the few of us that would Google FutaleufĂș.*** However, I'm sure the explosion was big news at the time to some!
*** Does "Google" used as a verb maintain its capitalization?
